Let’s go through everything from prerequisites to concentrations, research, career choices and more!

As universities start to send out admissions offers for the second round of applicants, here is a round-up of things you should know about Carleton’s Health Science program if you applied, or are looking to apply in the future. This program is ideal for students interested in medicine, biomedical research, global health, research and development and more! There are a multitude of post-secondary pathways that Health Sciences students are able to take, and this program helps to explore all those possibilities.

Overview

Carleton’s Bachelor of Honours Health Sciences is a 4-year program that will help students gain a strong foundation of scientific knowledge and methods that can be applied in a science, medicine-related spectrum, or socially. The fourth year is a capstone experience where students are able to choose from a variety of hands-on experiences like local, national or international research placements; or a divulge in a research thesis in addition to taking 1.5 credits from other program concentrations.

The program is divided into 5 concentrations of study that applying students can choose from which include: Biomedical Sciences, Disability & Chronic Illness, Environment/Health, Global Health, and Health Throughout the Lifespan.

The program is designed to prepare students for graduate education such as medical school, dental school, veterinary medicine etc., and gives students the ability to combine these concentrations in unique ways to cater to their interests.

Example: Biomedical Sciences

As an example, here is a map of what the Biomedical Sciences concentration will entail in terms of courses for the first two years:

Year 1:

  • Fundamentals of Health Communications
  • Foundations of Biology I & II
  • General Chemistry I & II
  • Elementary Calculus I
  • Introduction to Ethics and Social Issues
  • Introduction to Psychology I & II OR Introduction to Economics I & II

Year 2:

  • Research Methods
  • Cellular & Molecular Pathology
  • Social Determinants of Health
  • Microbiology and Virology
  • Physical Biochemistry
  • Cellular Biochemistry
  • Introduction to Statistical Modeling I & II

This concentration gives students a strong foundation for genetic, biochemical, immunological, physiological and developmental studies of health. The concentration not only focuses on science but also on the social, cultural, psychological and environmental aspects of healthcare. A perfect concentration for students interested in research or medicine.
